The undisputed capital of the Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo is a coastal fraction of the Gallura center of Arzachena, with a few hundred residents. In the summer it becomes an extraordinary and sparkling parade of yachts, yachts and famous people: in the square, it is easy to find yourself shopping with movie and television stars. Every day is a continuous alternation of appointments with the international jet set: parties, social life, sporting events, golf in particular.
The seaside village was built around a natural inlet that resembles a deer. The old port dates back to the 1960s when with a brilliant intuition Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, fascinated by the beauty of the coast, decided to buy the lands of this corner of Gallura and, together with the French scenographer Jacques Couelle – later joined by some Italian architects – to give life to the paradise of elite international tourism. In the 1980s, work began on the construction of the new tourist port, today one of the largest and most equipped in the Mediterranean (700 berths), which has been awarded the Blue Flag for tourist landings for several consecutive years, a prize awarded by the Fee (Foundation for Environmental Education) for water quality, services offered and sustainability. The port is home to the Costa Smeralda yacht club, a prestigious club that organizes international sailing regattas. Walking on the quays you will admire the boats of rich characters moored.
The center of Poltu Celvu (in Gallura) is built on a raised floor above the port. From the Piazzetta delle Chiacchiere to the Sottopiazza there is an intrigue of alleys, windows, balconies – built in what has become the style of the Costa Smeralda – and of shops and boutiques with prestigious brands. All around are the most prestigious restaurants, luxury hotels, the most fashionable clubs, the center of the coast’s nightlife. The splendid villas climb up to the surrounding hills, immersed in the Mediterranean scrub. In planning, the prince and his collaborators thought they could create an architecture that kept as much continuity as possible with the typical local one, perfectly fitting it into the environment: it was the key to success. Speaking of architecture, don’t miss the Stella Maris church, the work of architect Michele Busiri Vici, which dominates Porto Cervo marina.
Breathtaking beaches shine within walking distance of the tourist center. In the turquoise, green and blue reflections of the sea the arched expanse of white and soft sand of the Grande Pevero plunges, flanked by granite rocks shaped by time and Mediterranean scrub. Behind it, there are well-kept golf courses that make the location a popular destination for passionate golfers. Separated by a promontory, you will find the Piccolo Pevero, a beach less than half the length of its ‘big sister’. Offshore you will admire the islets of Li Nibani, ‘the seagulls’. Two kilometers further south are other wonders: the Romazzino and the Principe beach (in honor of Aga Khan). At the opposite base of the ’emerald’ promontory, you will be entranced by delightful coves, including Cala di Volpe and Liscia Ruja. Further south, you cannot miss the paradise of Cala Capriccioli, beaches of fine and clear sand, protected by yellow, pink, and reddish granite rocks. The Gallura name means ‘goats’, that is, a pair of powerful and rounded smooth boulders that form various coves. The beach to the east is ideal for families, the western side is made up of the ‘Pirata’ and ‘Tartarughe’ beaches. The panorama is enriched by the islands of Soffi and Camere and the islet of Mortorio.
